Perth Public Transport Authority Selects Honeywell for Urban Rail Safe Project; Honeywell Digital Video Manager at Core of Centralized CCTV Monitoring System

SYDNEY, Australia – Honeywell Building Solutions on May 13, 2004, announced it has received a $7.1 million order from the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia (PTA) for the design and construction of a centralized closed circuit television (CCTV) monitoring and digital recording system for Perth’s urban railway network.

The new system is part of the Western Australian Government’s multi-million dollar TrainSafe Program to increase patron confidence in safety and security when traveling on Perth’s urban rail network. The order will see Honeywell connecting to 800 cameras across the network within the next 12 months, providing 24-hour, live vision to a monitoring room staffed by three to six officers based at a central, secure location.

“A world-class urban rail system requires a world-class security system,” said Allanah McTiernan, Planning and Infrastructure Minister for Western Australia. “We are committed to ensuring passengers have absolute confidence in the safety of Perth’s urban rail system.”

The project includes a 10,000 point Honeywell Enterprise Buildings Integrator(TM) (EBI) alarm management system integrated with a Honeywell Digital Video Manager (DVM) enabling seven day on-line digital video storage, a Honeywell Ultrak(R) Max-1000 CCTV management system for live video display, PTA’s own existing Programmable Logic Controllers at each train station for alarm inputs and response; and a Jacques Voice Over IP (VOIP) Public Address System for event-driven announcements at train stations.

“What we are introducing is a top-of-the-range, closed circuit television (CCTV) and alarm system, which will be monitored from a central point and incidents responded to immediately,” McTiernan said. “This sophisticated surveillance will reduce the incidence of crime and vandalism by deterring criminals and by helping Public Transport Authority security staff identify and track offenders. It will help in the prosecution and conviction of offenders by providing video and still images of sufficient quality to be tendered in court as evidence.”

Over the next three years, it is expected that the system will expand to include more than 1,200 cameras distributed across more than 70 train stations when the New MetroRail Southern Suburbs Rail Line is brought on-line.

“This project is a significant win for Honeywell as it represents one of the largest digital video recording systems ever installed in Australia,” said Paul Bardon, General Manager, Honeywell Building Solutions, Pacific. “It is extremely gratifying to see Australian-developed high technology being used to ensure the safety and security of rail commuters. We are very pleased to partner with the Western Australian Government and the PTA to improve public safety.”

Honeywell won the project over 10 other bidders, due primarily to demonstrable compliance with the design brief, relevant experience and capabilities, and the solution’s local content. Honeywell EBI, DVM, Ultrak(R) Max-1000 and Jacques VOIP PA systems are all Australian- developed and manufactured products.
