Powell Industries Receives $46 Million Contract for Phase One of the Dulles Airport Metrorail Extension

HOUSTON — Powell Industries Inc., a manufacturer of equipment and systems for the control, distribution and management of electrical and other dynamic processes, announced that it has received a $46 million contract to supply the packaged electrical power systems to distribute and control the power needs for Phase One of the Dulles Metrorail Project Silver Line extension.

Federal funding for Phase One of the project was approved on Jan. 7.

The total 23 mile extension will run from Northern Virginia to Dulles Airport and beyond. The first phase includes eleven new passenger stations and is approximately half of the total distance.

Powell will supply the Traction Power Substations plus additional equipment for underground installation and equipment enclosures to house the communications and signaling equipment. Equipment delivery will begin in 2010 with final acceptance in late 2013.

“This is the second large-scale project we have received in recent years for traction power systems in the Washington, DC area,” said Patrick McDonald, Powell’s CEO. “The first contract was awarded by WMATA in 2005 to provide the needed electrical power systems for increased ridership. That project was successful, and the reviews and responses from WMATA operators have been extremely favorable.

“WMATA will be the operator for the new extension once completed, and I am certain this project will be just as successful as the first,” McDonald added. “We have anticipated this contract for some time and are pleased that our belief in the future of electric rail is well founded. We look forward to other opportunities afforded by future investment in U.S. transportation infrastructure. Interestingly, this new extension will ultimately connect to the Dulles People Mover at the Dulles Airport, which is also powered by Powell Traction Power Substations.”

Powell Industries Inc., headquartered in Houston, designs, manufactures and packages systems and equipment for the control, distribution and management of electrical energy and other dynamic processes. Powell provides products and services to large industrial customers such as utilities, oil and gas producers, refineries, petrochemical plants, pulp and paper producers, mining operations, commuter railways and other vehicular transportation facilities.
