G.I. Jobs Names Union Pacific Railroad Top Military-Friendly Employer

OMAHA, Neb.G.I Jobs has named Union Pacific as America’s top military-friendly employer for 2009. It is the sixth time in seven years the magazine, the nation’s premier career guide for military job seekers, has named Union Pacific to its list.

“Union Pacific values the commitment, training and diversity that our armed forces bring to the workplace,’ said Barb Schaefer, Union Pacific senior vice president – Human Resources. “Our continued efforts to attract veterans have resulted in a win-win situation for the company and the veterans we have hired.

“Military veterans typically are goal-oriented and bring a strong work ethic, excellent training and a world view that strengthens our organization at all levels,” Schaefer said. “We have been impressed with the dedication military veterans bring to Union Pacific.  The military instills a sense of commitment to go the extra mile to get the job done under all sorts of challenging environments including extreme weather conditions and tight timelines.”

While the global recession has forced Union Pacific to slow overall hiring the last 12 months, the railroad’s recruiting department has developed a new military task team to create and implement a military recruiting plan. Union Pacific has continued its involvement at military transition offices, military education offices, reserve units, military panels, National Guard units, career fairs, information sessions, employer panels, resume review assistance and serving on local military committees and boards.

In addition to being recognized by G.I. Jobs, Union Pacific was presented the Military Officers Association of America Distinguished Service Award in 2009. The railroad is a member of the Army Reserve’s Employee Partnership Initiative, is a supporter of the Army Partnership for Youth Success program and was presented the Freedom Award, the U.S. government’s highest employer recognition, in 2008.

Earlier this year, BusinessWeek named Union Pacific one of the top 50 places to launch a career.
