EPA Recognizes BNSF Logistics for Outstanding Environmental Performance

SPRINGDALE, Ark. — The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized BNSF Logistics with its outstanding environmental performance designation in the SmartWay Transport Partner program. BNSF Logistics has been a SmartWay Transport Partner since 2005 and activities under its annual program objectives have generated the highest score possible — 1.25.

“Our customers demand environmentally and financially sustainable solutions from their supply chain partners,” stated Eric Wolfe, BNSF Logistics vice president and general manager. “Customers are taking a long-term view of decisions they are making today and seeking partners who can present modal alternatives that benefit the environment. Our expertise in providing truckload, intermodal, and rail solutions delivers energy efficiency, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and improves air quality, key tenets of the SmartWay Transport Partner program.”

“Shipping goods is vital to the U.S. economy and current trends indicate that ground freight transportation will consume over 45 billion gallons of diesel fuel and produce over 450 million metric tons of carbon dioxide by 2012,” commented Margo Oge, Director, Office of Transportation and Quality, with the EPA. “The SmartWay Transport Partnership aims to significantly curtail these emissions by reducing up to 150 million barrels of oil per year, the equivalent of saving 63 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. BNSF Logistics’ ability to offer its customers solutions across multiple modes is indicative of their commitment to environmental stewardship and supply chain efficiency.”
