Train Derailment Kills 4 in New York

A train carrying more than 100 passengers derailed in New York early Sunday, killing four people and injuring more than 60.

Officials say 11 of the injured passengers were in critical condition. All seven cars on the Metro-North train derailed on a curved section of track in the Bronx. The front train car slid far from the track and came to a stop just before entering the Hudson River.

Emergency officials say three of the fatalities were believed to have been thrown out of the train during the accident. Rescue workers found one of the fatalities inside the train. Emergency workers had to use cutting equipment to rescue some of the passengers.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said officials do not yet know what caused the derailment and would wait for the National Transportation Safety Board to conduct an investigation before speculating on what happened.

Governor Cuomo said rescue workers think everyone on the train is now accounted for. He said the train’s operator is among the injured.
