Southeastern Railway Museum to celebrate cabooses

The Southeastern Railway Museum will celebrate a venerable icon of the railroad: The caboose and the crews that called them home during. Caboose Days to be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 1-2.

The museum will host Caboose Days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 1-2.

The two-day event will feature temporary caboose tattoos, food, vendors and $2 rides on the museum’s restored antique handcar. The museum is home to more than a half-dozen vintage cabooses, including wood cabooses built in 1915 and 1916.

Guests will also have the opportunity ride in a caboose around the museum on a train pulled by a vintage locomotive.

Among the cabooses in the museum’s collection is Norfolk & Western caboose No. 500837, which is regularly used to ferry guests around the museum grounds. The Pittsburgh and West Virginia Railway built the “Northeastern” style caboose, which is today painted how it would have appeared in the late 1960s.

One of the other cabooses on display is Central of Georgia caboose No. X-92. The wood caboose was built in 1916 as a ventilated boxcar, and the Central of Georgia converted the car into a caboose in 1942.
