NORTH PLATTE, Neb. – North Platte is a railroad town. Union Pacific laid out the town in 1866. It was incorporated as a city in 1873 or 1874. During the years, many Union Pacific employees called North Platte home. An 80- by 263-square foot brick depot was dedicated in 1918, replacing a wooden structure that burned in 1915. The brick depot was closed circa 1940. In 2003, new bridges were opened, eliminating the need for grade crossings. That drastically reduced the noise volume in town. Today, Union Pacific operates Bailey Yard in North Platte. The 2,850-acre yard contains 315 miles of track, 985 switches and averages 135 trains daily.
