The Toccoa train depot in downtown is still used by Amtrak two times every day, and freight trains still pass through the city. It is not entirely clear when the deopot was built.

TOCCOA, Ga. – Twice daily Amtrak’s Crescent, which runs between New York and New Orleans stops in this Northeastern Georgia city with a deep railroad history.

In the 1870s, the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway made Toccoa a stop as the line was completed between Atlanta and Charlotte, N.C., in September 1973. The line was later assumed by Southern Railway and is today operated by Norfolk Southern.

A second railroad – the Elberton Air-Line Railroad – was completed between Elberton and Toccoa in 1878. Southern Railway later assumed the railroad’s operations.

Toccoa means beautiful in Cherokee.
