As of Sept. 30, 2020, positive train control (PTC) is in operation or revenue service demonstration (RSD) on 99.6 percent of the 57,537 route miles subject to the federal mandate, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) said.

The FRA said only one railroad, New Jersey Transit, is at risk of not fully implementing PTC on its required main lines by the end of the year. As of Sept. 30, New Jersey Transit is operating a PTC system in RSD on about 48 percent of the 375.9 route miles where PTC is required.

“Full implementation of PTC is in sight, owing to everyone’s unparalleled cooperation and determination,” FRA Administrator Ronald L. Batory said in a statement. “I’m incredibly proud of the intensive collaborations we have forged. Once complete, railroads, rail workers, and rail passengers will all benefit from this transformational accomplishment in railroad safety.”

Amtrak, for example, previously said it has completed PTC implementation on all its owned or controlled tracks.
