JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — CSX Transportation today launched an online Carbon Calculator, giving shippers and others the ability to make the best environmental choice of transportation options.
The user-friendly tool quickly calculates the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions savings of specific rail shipments, providing comparative data among transportation choices.
The Carbon Calculator, accessed through the company’s Web site prompts users to enter their shipment’s weight and miles shipped and returns the estimated CO2 savings of shipping by rail.
“Rail is the most environmentally-friendly and energy efficient land transportation option,” said Clarence Gooden, CSX executive vice president and chief commercial officer. “This tool enables our customers and others to better understand the difference they can make — on a shipment by shipment basis — by choosing rail.”
The CO2 emissions savings that CSXT rail transportation provides in one year has approximately the same positive environmental impact as if one million passenger vehicles were taken off the road. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that shifting 10 percent of long-haul freight from the highway to rail would reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by more than 12 million tons.
As companies throughout the country seek environmental benefits, they are looking to their business partners for help.
“We applaud CSXT’s commitment to provide environmentally sound transportation solutions,” said John Dineen, president and chief executive officer of GE — Transportation. “The Carbon Calculator serves as an innovative tool to empower businesses to make good decisions to drive productivity and limit greenhouse gas emissions.”
CSXT is a member of the EPA’s Climate Leaders program in which the company has committed to reducing its emissions and leveraging other means for environmental benefits. CSXT is also an award-winning and charter member of the EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership. This partnership was designed to promote voluntary reductions in fuel consumption and emissions.
CSXT’s fuel conservation measures and better management of its waste stream have already contributed to that goal.
