The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference -Conductors, Trainpersons and Yardpersons (TCRC-CTY), which represents approximately 3,000 CN train and yard operations employees in Canada, has given the company 72 hours’ notice of its intention to strike the railway, CN said today.
The strike would begin at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on Feb. 8, 2014.
“Unfortunately, after only two days of discussions following the news that the Teamsters union had failed to ratify tentative agreements reached last October, the TCRC-CTY suddenly served a 72-hour strike notice to CN Tuesday evening,” Jim Vena, CN executive vice-president and chief operating officer, said in a statement. “We plan to return to the table today with the assistance of federal mediators and will decide our next steps at the end of the day if we fail to reach an agreement with the union.”
