New Jersey Sen. Michael Testa, R-Vineland, called on NJ Transit President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett to step down in light of ongoing delays, cancellations and service suspensions that have frustrated commuters for years.
“Constantly railing on NJ Transit feels like we’re beating a dead horse, but at this point a dead horse might be more efficient than riding NJ Transit,” Testa said. “During the last six years, we’ve seen NJ Transit’s service get considerably worse and commuters are being forced to pay more for unreliable transportation. In no world would an organization be able to continue business as usual while suffering so many failures.
“New Jerseyans need real leadership at NJ Transit and more importantly they need realistic solutions,” Testa added. “This is especially true for my constituents in South Jersey, who have long been underserved by the lack of public transit options. I’ve been sounding the alarm for five years about the economic limitations associated with inadequate and non-existent service for commuters and it is beyond time for the agency to be held accountable.
Despite South Jersey’s lack of public transit options, job creators in the region are being forced to pay higher taxes, further deteriorating the region’s economic growth and workforce development.
“Simply throwing money at the problem and raising taxes, as the [Gov.Phil] Murphy administration has done, is not going to help commuters,” Testa said. “If Governor Murphy is serious about keeping his campaign promise to fix NJ Transit, considering a change of leadership over at NJ Transit would be a good place to start.”
