Metro-North Commuter Railroad has requested a one-year extension from the Surface Transportation Board for the negotiation period regarding trail use of the 41.1-mile Beacon Line in Dutchess and Putnam Counties, New York.

This extension would move the deadline to Feb. 8, 2026.

The STB issued a Notice of Interim Trail Use (NITU) for the Beacon Line, connecting Danbury, Connecticut, and Beacon, New York, on Feb. 8, 2024. This NITU allowed for a one-year negotiation period.

During this time, MNR must implement interim trail use or negotiate with third-party sponsors.

In February 2021, Metro-North announced its plans to stop using the line.

While Metro-North is working on agreements with potential sponsors, it is also preparing to take on trail sponsorship responsibilities if those talks fail. The railroad said more time is needed for internal processes and stakeholder coordination.

Metro-North emphasizes that extending the negotiation period is crucial for the progress of trail use along the Beacon Line. The company also seeks a waiver for this request’s $650 filing fee.

This extension will provide Metro-North additional time to finalize third-party agreements or prepare for trail sponsorship if approved. The Beacon Line is recognized as a potential recreational trail, supporting regional efforts to enhance public access and outdoor activities.
