Passengers can travel on Amtrak’s NextGen Acela on the Northeast Corridor starting Thursday, Aug. 28.

Amtrak said 28 brand-new trains will enter service through 2027, and will include 27% more seats per departure as part of expanded weekday and weekend schedules. Five new trainsets will be in service initially.

“NextGen Acela is more than a new train—it’s an evolution of travel,” Amtrak President Roger Harris said in a release. “In just a few weeks, history will be made with the debut of NextGen Acela as we launch a new standard for American train travel.”

The NextGen Acela fleet was assembled at Alstom’s Hornell, New York, facility, using components from more than 180 suppliers across 29 states.

Amtrak said the new trainsets are part of a broader fleet modernization plan, which includes the introduction of new Amtrak Airo trains on the Amtrak Cascades, Northeast Regional, and East Coast routes. It also includes new, more efficient long-distance locomotives and upgraded interiors in coaches, dining cars, sleepers, and sightseer lounges featuring new seat cushions, upholstery, lighting, and finishes.
