NJ Transit is preparing for the predicted heavy rain, high winds and possible flooding forecast to arrive beginning tomorrow and continuing through Monday.

All NJ Transit services will continue operating on regular schedules for as long as weather and road conditions safely allow. New Jersey is expected to see rain, strong winds and potentially flooding conditions as the storm moves through.

As a reminder, New Jersey will enter a State of Emergency tonight at 10 p.m., so NJ Transit customers are advised to only travel during the storm if necessary. Customers who must travel are strongly urged to build in extra time for their commute.

For the safety of our customers and employees, weather conditions may require temporary service suspensions. Should that occur, NJ Transit will provide as much advance notice as possible. However, conditions are expected to change quickly due to the nature of the storm.

Customers are encouraged to continuously monitor njtransit.com or the NJ Transit mobile app for the latest service information.

Systemwide cross-honoring will be in effect for rail, bus and private carriers and light rail service on Sunday, October 11 and Monday, Oct. 12.

For example, customers who normally take the bus from Rutherford to the Port Authority Bus Terminal may use their bus pass or ticket on the train from Rutherford to New York Penn Station. Customers using their tickets or passes to travel to a destination other than the destination printed on their original ticket will be subject to the appropriate additional fare if applicable.

NJ Transit’s Emergency Operations Center will be open and closely monitoring weather forecasts and conditions as the storm develops. NJ Transit’s Office of Emergency Management is monitoring storm surge data and is coordinating with partners at the state, county and local levels.

Key personnel and equipment will be pre-positioned to respond to any impacts to the system throughout the duration of the storm. This includes the following:

  • Bringing in rail infrastructure crews to respond to potential impacts
  • Staging diesel locomotives at key positions to respond if issues occur with overhead wires
  • Having tree removal companies on alert
  • Preparing for sandbag operations if needed
  • Bringing in additional bus supervisors
  • Bringing in bus garage staff early
  • Addional Light Rail staff assigned to monitor conditions
  • Repositioning key light rail equipment to safe locations
  • Light Rail systems have tree removal equipment ready

Customers are advised to use extreme caution around bus stops, stations and facilities as slippery conditions may exist. Customers should also build extra travel time into their schedules, as delays and cancellations are possible due to the storm’s impact.
