The Utah Transit Authority will buy 20 additional Stadler Citylink light-rail vehicles, exercising options from a 2024 deal and bringing the planned TRAX fleet addition to 40 trains.
UTA’s board approved the expansion under the “TRAX Forward” program to grow and modernize service over the next decade. The base order—valued at $129 million and partially funded by a Federal Transit Administration grant—included options for up to 60 more vehicles.
The new trains are tailored for TRAX service linking Salt Lake City with surrounding communities. They will be built at Stadler’s factory in Salt Lake City.
Citylink cars feature low-floor, barrier-free access to speed boarding, improving the rider experience. UTA says the expanded fleet will help meet rising ridership and support future service improvements.
Stadler notes that its Citylink platform has sold more than 800 units in Europe since 2003, with a reputation for low vibration and reliability. Stadler USA, founded in 2016, now employs over 600 workers at its expanded Utah facility and expects additional growth as U.S. demand increases.
MDOT and UTA did not announce delivery timing for the added vehicles. Further procurement and project details will be released as TRAX Forward advances.
