DUNWOODY, Georgia — Railfanning.org Publisher and Editor Todd DeFeo will present “The Roswell Railroad Ecosystem” during a special event hosted by the Dunwoody Preservation Trust.

The talk, part of the Dunwoody Preservation Trust’s History Alive series, is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Donaldson-Bannister Farm.

DeFeo’s presentation will examine the Roswell Railroad as part of the Southern Railway and the broader regional rail network, rather than as an isolated line.

While railroads are often viewed individually, DeFeo argues they historically functioned as interconnected systems, with smaller lines linking to larger railroads to move passengers and freight. Over time, many major railroads absorbed these smaller operations, expanding their reach while reducing the total number of railroad companies.

According to DeFeo, the Roswell Railroad offers a clear example of how these relationships worked in practice. By placing the line within its wider historical context, he said, it becomes evident that the Roswell Railroad was one component of a larger ecosystem that shaped transportation and economic development across the region.

The presentation marks the third time DeFeo has spoken to the Dunwoody Preservation Trust. He previously addressed the group in July 2024 and July 2025. DeFeo has been described as “Georgia’s favorite railroad historian” for his work documenting railroad history through lectures, writing and digital media.

DeFeo is also the author of A Brief History of Streetcars in the Classic City, which was published in December 2023.
