Genesee & Wyoming Inc. said its latest industrial development efforts produced 44 projects representing more than $1 billion in customer investments across 16 states, supporting job growth and additional rail traffic on its U.S. freight railroads.
The projects are expected to generate more than 700 jobs in communities served by G&W and add more than 82,000 carloads to the rail industry. While most projects were concentrated in the agriculture, chemical, and minerals and stone sectors, G&W said its railroads also helped advance developments in a range of other industries, including automotive, food and lumber.
Among the highlights were new facilities for soybean processor and biodiesel producer Incobrasa Industries in Illinois; aggregate construction materials company BURNCO in Texas; and grain and feed byproduct merchant Penny Newman Grain in Georgia. The company also cited an expansion by soybean processor Ag Processing Inc. in Washington state.
Several projects included the development of rail-to-truck transloading facilities, including one served by G&W’s Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad. G&W said transloading continues to grow in popularity among bulk commodity shippers seeking to combine rail’s cost advantages with trucking flexibility for first- and last-mile delivery.
G&W said it supports current and prospective customers through a database of more than 700 industrial development parks and sites located along its rail network.
