Railserve, a Marmon Rail company, has introduced YardGUARD, an integrated railyard safety system that incorporates real-time engineered controls into day-to-day switching operations.
Developed as a coordinated network of technologies embedded within Railserve’s service delivery, YardGUARD represents a new approach to managing risk, improving execution, and strengthening operating discipline across all industrial rail environments, company officials said.
YardGUARD brings together six interconnected safety components — CrossingGUARD, enhances control at crossings during active movements; DerailGUARD, which provides multi-layered confirmation of derail status with activation of emergency braking as needed; FoulGUARD, which reinforces clearance awareness in foul zones with automatic braking support; GapGUARD, which improves switch alignment and point-gap visibility with automatic braking support; StopGUARD, which offers automated emergency braking and crew awareness support in critical scenarios; and WatchGUARD, which delivers in-cab hazard detection and automatic braking support — into one safety system that delivers real-time visibility and alerts across critical areas of the yard.
The system is designed to address common operational challenges such as limited visibility, reliance on radio communication, and preventable incidents caused by switch misalignment, derail status, or railcar fouling.
Company officials said that unlike standalone safety tools, YardGUARD is configured to each railyard facility and embedded into Railserve’s operating model. The system integrates sensing, vision, communications, and cloud-based monitoring technologies to deliver synchronized yard-side indications and in-cab alerts — supporting more informed decision-making during active railcar moves.
