Internet records show Railfanning.org was registered on October 7, 2022. But the site’s history dates to January 27, 2002, predating its formal launch. The earliest railfanning content was initially hosted on another site that has today morphed into Sightseers’ Delight.
To celebrate 20 years of Railfanning.org, we’ve recreated some of the original content below. Please recognize some of the original links and forms have been removed as they are no longer active.

Train Kept A-Rollin’…

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Union Pacific 4625 heads up a Norfolk Southern freight train, headed south to the city. The NS line then heads to Atlanta, where trains are sent all over the south. Box cars on the train sporting 20 year old paint jobs, read “Southern serves the South.”
What is Railfanning?
ST. LOUIS — There are a lot of people who have never heard the term railfanning. But many people are familiar with the concept.
Along the rails of America, stretching from one coast to another, you will see people standing beside the tracks enjoying the splendor of trains. Whether it is a freight train, a passenger train or an excursion train, little parallels the adrenaline rush caused by a train barreling past at 60 mph.
Who Are We?
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — We’ve got Norfolk & Western coal cars, Southern box cars, Chessie System hoppers and Amtrak passenger cars. Here at Train Kept A-Rollin’, we look for the many different flags that can be seen on America’s railroads.
We’ve created an e-group, hosted by Yahoo Groups, to better manage the pictures, which range from such exotic locations as Marietta, Ga., to Hopkinsville, Ky., and several points in between. To join the group, just enter your e-mail address below:

ATLANTA — Great vantage points are key to quality railfanning photos.
But, before a vantage point on any quality can even be considered, safety must first be ensured. Trains are big and they will not stop. Don’t get in their way.
