COLUMBIA, South Carolina — The South Carolina Department of Transportation completed the bridge replacement project on the U.S. Highway 21 bridge over CSX Transportation in Yemassee.

On Sept. 20, 2023, a train derailment damaged the bridge, which was closed for replacement. SCDOT expedited the replacement project, and the bridge reopened to traffic today, less than one year after the emergency closure and ahead of schedule.

The new bridge was built to modern standards, including being raised for greater rail clearance, featuring wider shoulders, and repaving the area to ensure a safe and smooth driving experience.
