Amtrak welcomed guests on board the new NextGen Acela high-speed trains on the Northeast Corridor, marking the start of this service, which began at 5 a.m. in Washington, DC, and at 6 a.m. in Boston.

Amtrak has awarded design-build contracts and begun pre-construction activities for three rail yard modernization projects on the Northeast Corridor, which officials said will help improve service reliability and enable more efficient, world-class train maintenance.

Passenger train service involving routes to Chicago, Miami and New York is on hold because of a coal train derailment in northeastern North Carolina on Sunday.
