OMAHA, Neb. — Union Pacific Railroad has earned the prestigious TRANSCAER National Achievement Award for the third consecutive year. The award recognizes extraordinary achievement in support of the TRANSCAER (Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response) initiative. TRANSCAER is the voluntary national outreach effort to help communities prepare for and respond to a possible hazardous material transportation incident. In 2009, Union Pacific organized or assisted with multiple events that led to training more than 4,800 emergency responders. Union Pacific Railroad Invests Nearly $6 Million for Track Improvements to Its Line from Near Bunker Hill to Walker, Kan.

OMAHA, Neb. — Union Pacific will improve part of Kansas’ transportation infrastructure with a nearly $6 million investment to its rail line that runs from near Bunker Hill to Walker, Kan. The projects include removing and installing more 20 miles of rail and more than 10,000 ties, spread more than 10,000 tons of rock ballast to ensure a stable roadbed and renew the surfaces in 28 road crossings. AAR: Rail Carload Freight Reaches Highest Level in More Than a Year

WASHINGTON — Carload freight volume on U.S. railroads reached its highest level in more than a year during the week ended Feb. 27, the Association of American Railroads reported. U.S. railroads originated 290,261 carloads during the week ended Feb. 27, up 2.6 percent from the comparable week in 2009 and the highest level reported since the week ended Dec. 6, 2008. However, the total was still down 13.5 percent from comparison week in 2008. In order to offer a complete picture of the progress in rail traffic, AAR now reports 2010 weekly rail traffic with comparison weeks in both 2009
