Description

The Historic Sites & Unique Stories of the ‘State Road’

The workers who built the Western & Atlantic Railroad between Atlanta and Chattanooga, Tennessee, carved through mountains, crossed rivers and wound a path through North Georgia’s hilly countryside. They built the “crookedest road under the sun,” as John W. Lewis, the railroad’s superintendent, called it in the 1860 report. Even with many upgrades over the years, the route largely follows the one built more than a century-and-a-half ago.
