OMAHA, Neb. — Fortune has named Union Pacific the railroad industry’s “Most Admired” company as part of the magazine’s “World’s Most Admired Companies” survey. Union Pacific ranked No. 1 among the railroads in each of Fortune’s nine key attributes of reputation: innovation, people management, use of corporate assets, social responsibility, quality of management, financial soundness, long-term investment and global competitiveness.”Our goal is to operate a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible railroad that delivers value for customers and shareholders,” said Jim Young, Union Pacific president and CEO. “I am extremely proud of the tremendous focus, dedication and effort by all our employees, especially in these challenging economic times.
“In order to meet the future transportation needs of our country, we will continue to invest in our rail system and technology,” Young said. “Also, we will continue our work to enhance the many environmental benefits of freight rail. As a matter of fact, one UP train can move one ton 830 miles. To put that in perspective, it would be like your car getting 400 miles to the gallon.”
Fortune also included Union Pacific among its 363 “World’s Most Admired” companies. The survey started with approximately 1,400 companies and included more than 4,000 executives, directors, and securities analysts.
