Three women were killed and a fourth injured when a train struck their car at a grade crossing in the city of South Fulton south of Atlanta, according to published reports.
The driver of the car possibly tried to beat the train before it reached the grade crossing, a report on WSB-AM indicated.
“The engine flew. Debris. Airbags. Parts from the car,” ajc.com quoted a witness as saying. “And that’s when I pulled my car across the grass and jumped out and tried to go help the ladies.”
The crash happened around 4 p.m. at a grade crossing on Buffington Road.
“CSX appreciates the swift response by local emergency personnel and extends its thoughts to those impacted by this tragic event,” various media quoted CSX as saying in a statement.
