VERSAILLES, Kentucky — The Bluegrass Railroad Museum offers a peaceful ride through the Kentucky landscape and past horse farms until it reaches what can only be described as a remarkable engineering marvel.
The 1,659-foot-long Young’s High Bridge was built in 1889. The Louisville Southern Railroad built the bridge for its roughly 25-mile-long Lexington Extension connecting Lawrenceburg and Lexington.
The bridge remained in service until November 1985, when Norfolk Southern Railway abandoned the line. The 8.25-mile-long Lexington Extension was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
Illinois Central Gulf GP8 7738 served as the train’s motive power for this particular journey. Volunteers founded the railroad museum in 1976.
