United Kingdom’s Rail Accident Investigation Branch Probing Sept. 29 Flying Scotsman Collision

The United Kingdom’s Rail Accident Investigation Branch is probing a Sept. 29 collision involving the Flying Scotsman steam locomotive at Aviemore station on the Strathspey Railway.

At around 6:05 p.m. on Sept. 29, the locomotive collided with a set of stationary passenger coaches at Aviemore station. The collision occurred at approximately 7 mph. The Strathspey Railway, a heritage railway, operates the part of Aviemore station where the collision happened.

The collision caused injuries to several passengers and staff, with one passenger and one staff member being taken to hospital. No rail vehicles derailed due to the mishap, although some damage was caused to the vehicles involved.

The investigation will seek to identify the sequence of events leading up to the accident. It will also consider the actions of those involved, anything that may have influenced them, and the railway staff’s management involved in the accident, including their training and competence.

It will also explore the method of operation in use when the collision occurred, the policies and procedures in place for managing such operations, the extent and type of injuries and damage caused, how they occurred and any underlying management factors.
