NJ Transit was presented the “Leading Capital Construction Projects” award from the New Jersey Alliance for Action for its Hoboken Connect project and the Market Street Bus Garage rehabilitation project in Paterson.
The mixed-use, transit-oriented development (TOD) Hoboken Connect project will transform Hoboken with office, housing and retail space in addition to public infrastructure upgrades including the bus and ferry terminals and surrounding areas. The Market Street Bus Garage project will upgrade and modernize the historic building, preparing it to accommodate the necessary charging infrastructure as the agency’s Zero Emission Bus Program continues to advance.

Corbett said. “Advancing important TOD projects such as Hoboken Connect, as well as the modernization of aging bus facilities like the Market Street Bus Garage, are critical to ensuring our transportation system meets the customer demand and sustainability goals for the next generation of transit riders.”
The Hoboken Connect project includes a mixed-use residential building consisting of 386 apartment homes with 20% dedicated as affordable housing, a 20-story Class A office building with a rooftop terrace, 5,000 square feet of retail space. Public investments will include construction of a new bus terminal on Hudson Place, significant rehabilitation of the first and second floors of the Ferry Terminal Building for commercial and exhibition space, the redevelopment of Warrington Plaza, and improvements to Hudson Place to support bicycle and pedestrian access to the transportation facilities.
The project, located at the iconic Hoboken Terminal, will, directly and indirectly, support 5,840 construction jobs and 7,265 permanent jobs. The ongoing economic impact of the project is estimated at more than $2.08 billion annually at full build-out, with more than $1.0 billion estimated in annual payroll.
The Market Street Bus Garage rehabilitation project will provide for an updated facility that includes a new floor slab; sub-surface monitoring system upgrades; upgrades to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems; life safety system upgrades; the installation of an elevator; the installation of a backup generator for the entire facility; interior renovations, including work to prepare the garage to accommodate necessary charging infrastructure for battery-electric buses; repointing and repair of brick exterior; installation of public art; and an approximately 3,232 square-foot building addition.
The Market Street Bus Garage is part of the Northern Division of NJ Transit Bus Operations. Built in 1903 to operate as a trolley barn, the historic garage stores 150 buses. This facility plays a major role in the bus maintenance, repair, and servicing operations for NJ Transit buses in Northern New Jersey.
