New Jersey Assemblywoman Annette Quijano, D-Union, today voiced strong concern over the frequent delays and disruptions in NJ Transit service and emphasized the urgent need for improved service and customer satisfaction.
Trains on the Northeast Corridor, among others, have frequently experienced service delays caused by track maintenance, operational and mechanical issues, equipment availability, and cancellations originating from Penn Station, where many of Assemblywoman Quijano’s constituents start and end their journey.
Additional feedback from commuters and residents alike has underscored significant challenges, including ongoing delays, cancellations, overcrowding, and communication breakdowns. These challenges are exacerbated by deteriorating or malfunctioning infrastructure, such as the recent issue at the Raritan River Bridge, which could not fully close, preventing trains from continuing their routes.
“It is imperative that NJ Transit take immediate steps to address the persistent issues affecting New Jersey residents who rely on public transportation to get to work, doctor’s appointments, and school,” Quijano said. “My district is served by three major train lines and numerous bus routes, all of which our residents depend on. It is unacceptable to burden them with fare hikes for a service that remains unreliable and lacks concrete solutions to its many ongoing issues.”
Quijano wants more transparency and accountability to ensure NJ Transit can provide reliable and efficient service, and is committed to collaborating with fellow legislators to address commuter concerns.
“I will be working closely with my legislative colleagues and stakeholders across the state to demand and implement meaningful reforms at NJ Transit,” Quijano added. “Every New Jerseyan deserves a reliable, safe, and dependable transit system.”
Quijano noted that Assembly Democrats have worked to secure funding to improve and upgrade the state’s transportation infrastructure. This includes reauthorizing the Transportation Trust Fund which is used to maintain roads and bridges, and approving a dedicated revenue source for NJ Transit.
