Officials in Wales are exploring a tramway to connect Cardiff Central and Bay.
The Cardiff Council and Transport for Wales are considering the tram as part of the first phase of Cardiff Crossrail, which calls for a route from the northwest to the east of Cardiff, linking with the proposed Parkway railway station.
The first phase focuses on the Cardiff Central-to-Cardiff Bay tramway, which officials said would improve access to Butetown and provide more capacity for residents and visitors to explore local attractions. A public consultation is open until Oct. 27 for feedback on the proposals.
The project involves £100 million in funding that the Cardiff Council and TfW secured and contributed by the UK and Welsh governments. It aligns with a South Wales Metro initiative to offer faster and more frequent services with new trams.
Key features include a new two-platform station at Cardiff Central, a tramway crossing through Callaghan Square and an additional platform at Cardiff Bay station. The plan also includes enhancements to public spaces along the route.
Future phases could see an extension of the tram from Cardiff Bay to a new station on Pierhead Street, subject to additional funding.
