KiwiRail recently unveiled the first of its new hi-tech locomotives in Christchurch.
Transport Minister Simeon Brown saw the first two prototypes, built by world-leading locomotive manufacturer Stadler in Spain, at Christchurch’s Middleton rail depot this morning.
KiwiRail Chief Executive Peter Reidy says 66 new DM class locomotives have been purchased, with Government funding from previous Budgets to replace KiwiRail’s aging locomotives and wagons.
Of the 66 DM locomotives, KiwiRail will use 47 in the South Island and 19 in the North Island.
The first two DM locomotives will undergo an extensive testing and commissioning program at Middleton over the next six months before they enter service. The DM’s will continue to arrive in batches until late 2026.
- Diesel locomotives built to a low emissions profile (meeting the EU Stage V emission standard)
- Significantly improved fuel efficiency:
- Equipped with an auto engine start stop (AESS) system which can switch off the engine when the locomotive is idling, saving fuel
- Driver Energy Reduction & Advisory System to support the locomotive and drivers to achieve its optimal energy performance.
- Improved monitoring technology:
- Instantaneous fleet geographical location, speed, fuel tank status and battery main switch status
- Summary indication of mileage, energy consumption for each locomotive.
