The South Carolina Department of Transportation and the city of Columbia, South Carolina; the Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Railroad Administration, will host an in-person public meeting next month about the Assembly Street railroad separation project to reduce traffic congestion caused by train crossings.
The public information meeting will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 11m at 701 Whaley, 701 Whaley Street, Columbia, SC 29201 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The meeting provide the opportunity for the public to review the reasonable alternatives and proposed designs and make comments. Visit the project website for additional information.
The proposed project includes roadway and rail improvements, including road and rail crossing separations, along and near Assembly Street south of downtown. The proposed project study area is bounded by Blossom Street to the north, Pickens Street to the east, the Norfolk Southern rail line 1.1 miles southeast of Rosewood Drive toward Andrews Yard, and Catawba Circle/Heyward Street/Dreyfuss Road/Assembly Street to the west.
The Assembly Street railroad separation project and related rail studies for the area have been evaluated for many years. The project team and community stakeholders have been focused on the current study area of the Assembly Street corridor and nearby streets since 2018. The current public information meeting period is a preliminary planning step that will later result in a preferred alternative identified for the project design, which will be presented to the public for additional comment.
SCDOT will accept public comments on this proposed project from Dec. 11, 2024 to Jan. 11, 2025. Any information provided, including names and addresses, is subject to disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act.
