Staten Island’s new R211S cars, unveiled just weeks ago, have been sidelined by technical issues, the Staten Island Advance reported.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority launched new R211S subway cars into service on the Staten Island Railway on Oct. 8. The cars are part of a 535-car order, which includes 440 R211A standard cars with state-of-the-art amenities, 75 Staten Island Railway cars and 20 cars with open gangway feature.

It is not clear when the trains might return to service. However, as the cars are still under warranty, the fix should not cost taxpayers, the Post reported.

“We are very committed to Staten Island,” the New York Post quoted MTA CEO Janno Lieber as telling reporters on Monday. “I know it’s sport out there to take shots at the MTA, but we’re investing heavily in Staten Island. We’re determined to make sure that they have access.”
