MARTA General Manager and CEO Collie Greenwood is stepping down, apparently citing concerns about immigration.

Greenwood, a Canadian native, joined MARTA as the chief of bus operations and urban planning in July 2019 and was appointed deputy general manager of operations and urban planning in 2020.

In October 2022, the MARTA Board named him general manager and CEO.

“The City of Atlanta thanks Collie Greenwood for his service at MARTA and wishes him success in his next chapter,” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said in a statement.

“As we look ahead, my Administration remains committed to building a world-class transit system for Atlanta and the entire region,” Dickens added. “A safe, reliable and connected MARTA is essential to our goals for equity, economic mobility and sustainability, and to my vision of a city built for the future with opportunity for all.”

The mayor thanked the MARTA Board, specifically Chairwoman Jennifer Ide and Vice Chair Al Pond, for their leadership. He said he is ready to work closely with them, along with the leaders of Fulton, DeKalb and Clayton counties, “to identify a leader to propel MARTA into the future.”

“This is a pivotal opportunity to accelerate the system improvements and expansions our residents have long called for,” Dickens said.

“We will also continue deepening collaboration with fellow municipal leaders across the region to ensure that MARTA keeps pace with our growth,” Dickens added. “Together, we can and will deliver an innovative transit system that moves Atlanta forward.”

In 2024, Greenwood was named to Atlanta Magazine’s “Atlanta 500” list and Georgia Trend’s “100 Most Influential Georgians.” Under his leadership, MARTA was honored with the Outstanding Public Transportation System Award by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) for remarkable leadership, systemwide excellence, and serving as an exemplary role model for other North American transit agencies.

Before joining MARTA, Greenwood served as chief service officer at North America’s third-largest transit system, the Toronto Transit Commission. While there, he oversaw bus, subway, streetcar, accessible transit, station services, and transit security and guided the TTC through several transformative initiatives.
