Alstom has unveiled the design of its Traxx Universal electric locomotive for Romania’s Railway Reform Authority, marking progress on a 2024 contract for 16 locomotives and two decades of maintenance.
The first unit has arrived in Romania and is undergoing dynamic testing at the Faurei Testing Centre, with further trials planned in Germany. Designed for speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour and capable of hauling 16 passenger cars, the locomotives will feature onboard ERTMS systems for enhanced safety, efficiency, and interoperability.
The contract includes an option to extend maintenance for an additional 20 years, with deliveries scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026. Alstom, active in Romania for more than 30 years, is also involved in major electrification, signaling and metro projects across the country.
“We are proud to see the first Traxx Universal locomotive for ARF entering testing on schedule,” Gabriel Stanciu, managing director of Alstom Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova, said in a release. “This is a significant step forward in our commitment to delivering high-performance, sustainable mobility solutions for Romania.”
