Dunedin Railways has launched a reimagined stop at Deep Stream on its world-famous Taieri Gorge journey — featuring a guided bridge walk and an extraordinary photo opportunity of the train crossing the historic structure.
The upgraded stop was officially rolled out on Dec. 5, highlighting the renewed momentum for Dunedin Railways and a commitment to innovating the iconic Taieri Gorge experience.
While Deep Stream has been featured as a limited stop in past years, the upgraded version offers a more immersive, passenger-focused experience. Dunedin Railways said it is part of the railroad’s broader investment in enhancing its signature journeys.
“This is an exciting step forward for Dunedin Railways,” General Manager Rebekah Jenkins said. “Deep Stream was a standout on the line before Covid, and this refreshed stop gives passengers the chance to reconnect with the landscape up close once again. It’s a subtle enhancement that makes a real difference to the experience.”
The redevelopment reflects Dunedin Railways’ continued focus on:
- Investing in the passenger experience through more immersive and interactive moments.
- Strengthening the storytelling of the Taieri Gorge train tour, highlighting the engineering, history, and landscape from new perspectives.
- Delivering on its strategic growth plan, which prioritises enhanced value and increased domestic and international appeal.
Jenkins said the upgraded experience is part of a wider transformation
that aims to modernise the company while celebrating its heritage roots.
“We’re incredibly proud of how far we’ve come — and how much opportunity lies ahead,” Jenkins said. “The Deep Stream enhancement is just one example of how we’re evolving our journeys for today’s travellers without losing what makes this railway special.”
