Southeastern Railway Museum Raising Money to Restore Historic U.S. Army Transportation Corps Locomotive Crane

DULUTH, Georgia — The Southeastern Railway Museum is hoping to raise $25,000 to finish the restoration of historic U.S. Army Transportation Corps Locomotive Crane C-271.

American Hoist & Derrick built the crane in 1953. In an email, the museum said it has raised $5,000 in donations from the National Railway Historical Society and museum members.

Its goal is to raise $20,000 to complete the restoration, including paint, window repairs, and general maintenance. Completed, C-271 will enhance our experiential learning while offering a unique operating exhibit on special occasions.

Separately, the museum is beginning the restoration of a former 1920s-era Southern Railway 4529, a heavyweight baggage car. The museum has raised $32,000 out of the $50,000 needed for the project, which includes roof and brake work.

Once complete, it will be painted Pullman Green, and museum officials said it will look similar to the Southern 4530 at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The museum plans to use the car for multiple uses, including serving as a venue for special events and private parties, as well as a classroom.
