WASHINGTON — CSX Transportation has filed a notice with federal regulators seeking permission to discontinue service on a 1.32-mile rail segment in Cook County, Illinois, citing a lack of freight traffic on the line for at least two years.
In a verified notice of exemption filed under Surface Transportation Board rules for discontinuances of service, CSX said it plans to end service on part of its Altenheim Subdivision between milepost BIH 0.93 and milepost BIH 2.25. The line is in ZIP code 60804.
CSX certified that no local freight traffic has moved over the line during the past two years and that any overhead traffic can be rerouted over other lines. The company also said that no formal complaints regarding the cessation of service are pending before the board or in federal court, and that the required notices, including newspaper publication and notice to government agencies, have been met.
Under the filing, the discontinuance would be processed under an exemption set to become effective on April 19, unless stayed. Petitions to stay the exemption that do not involve environmental issues — along with formal expressions of intent to file an offer of financial assistance to subsidize continued service — must be filed by March 30. Petitions for reconsideration are due April 9.
The filing is listed as Docket No. AB 55 (Sub-No. 826X). CSX said any employees adversely affected would be covered by standard federal employee-protection conditions associated with rail service discontinuances.
