New Jersey Senate Panel Advances Bill Aimed at Paratransit Accessibility

A New Jersey Senate committee advanced legislation that would require paratransit operators to announce scheduled stops, a move supporters say would improve accessibility and communication for riders with disabilities.

The Senate Transportation Committee advanced S-3786, sponsored by Sen. Kristin Corrado, R-Bergen, Essex and Passaic. The bill would require operators providing paratransit service to announce each scheduled stop along a vehicle’s route or ensure the information is provided through a recording system.

The measure is intended to give paratransit riders clearer and more consistent information during trips, similar to stop announcements available on other transit services.

Corrado said the bill aims to ensure that riders who rely on paratransit are not left uncertain about their travel simply because of the type of service they use.

Paratransit provides transportation for riders who cannot use fixed-route public transit because of a disability. Advocates have long argued that reliability, communication and accessibility are central to making the service usable for those who depend on it.

The bill now moves forward in the legislative process after clearing the transportation panel.
