The Georgia Central Railroad withdrew its petition filed with the Federal Railroad Administration seeking special approval to operate with one-person crews.
Georgia Central’s withdrawal of the petition comes after significant lobbying by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen and represents a victory for BLET members and railroad safety. It also follows FRA’s vigorous defense of the two-person crew rule before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
BLET said it is the only union that represents workers on the Georgia Central Railroad.
BLET has been the leading advocate for two-person train crews in the railroad industry as the best way to protect the safety of workers and the general public. Georgia Central is a 211-mile Genesee & Wyoming property operating between Savannah and Macon, Georgia. Workers there sought BLET representation to help secure protections available under a union contract. They voted to join BLET in a representation election certified by the National Mediation Board in October 2024.
Georgia Central petitioned the FRA for a waiver in late 2025, and BLET moved quickly to file a protest.
