(Railfanning.org News Wire) — Schneider National’s third-quarter profit more than doubled as truckload and intermodal earnings improved, prompting the transportation company to raise its full-year earnings forecast despite lower volumes in both businesses.
Companywide results for the third quarter of 2026, compared with the same period in 2025:
- Revenue: $1.59 billion, up 9%
- Net income: $49.5 million, up 155%
- Diluted earnings per share: 28 cents, up from 11 cents
- Adjusted diluted earnings per share: 29 cents, up from 12 cents
- Operating ratio: 96.1%, down 1.5 percentage points from 97.6%
What drove it: Truckload operating income rose 121% to $43.7 million, supported by improved pricing, productivity, equipment utilization and higher gains on equipment sales. Companywide revenue excluding fuel surcharges increased 3%, trailing the 9% increase in total revenue.
On the railroad: Intermodal operating income increased 35% to $22.6 million despite lower volume. Revenue excluding fuel surcharges rose 2% to $287.7 million as revenue per order increased 3%.
The intermodal operating ratio improved to 92.1% from 94%. Schneider attributed the earnings improvement to pricing and freight mix, partly offset by higher purchased transportation expenses.
The company also announced a new agreement with Norfolk Southern, which CEO Jim Filter said would enhance intermodal service and support growth.
Worth watching: Logistics operating income fell to zero from $6.4 million a year earlier. Higher purchased transportation costs and increased insurance expense tied to a prior-year claim erased the segment’s profit despite revenue growth.
Schneider raised its full-year adjusted earnings forecast to $1 to $1.10 per share and projected net capital expenditures of $325 million to $350 million. The outlook assumes continued contract rate recovery and productivity gains, with peak-season demand and driver availability remaining variables.
