Athens, Georgia, once boasted a robust streetcar network, and streetcars operated in the college town of Athens, Georgia, for about 45 years.
The system’s origins date to 1885, when a Texas resident came to town and was the driving force behind the enterprise. Mules pulled the first streetcars, but the line was later electrified. Ultimately, it was not a profitable enterprise, and streetcars in the city ceased operations for good in 1930.
