KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Amtrak station here was recently honored with a special award for Safety Excellence in recognition of the station’s safety performance in maintaining an injury-free workplace for more than 25 years.
“It gives the City of Kissimmee a tremendous sense of pride to have an employer in our community that has such an impressive track record and places a high premium on safety issues for both the public and its employees,” said Kissimmee Mayor Linda Goodwin-Nichols.
The Kissimmee Amtrak Station serves two of Amtrak’s Silver Service trains – the Silver Meteor and the Silver Star, traveling between New York City and Miami. Four trains stop at the station daily, two northbound and two southbound.
“The safety of our employees as well as our passengers is a top priority for Amtrak,” said Tom Kirk, Assistant Superintendent for Amtrak’s Southern Division. “To serve more than 30,000 passengers without incurring an injury, as the team at the Kissimmee station did just last year, is indeed a feat to be commended. To know they have been doing it for years is a source of pride for the entire team. We would like to recognize their hard work and dedication to safety.”
Located in historic Downtown Kissimmee, the station serves as the hub for the city’s planned intermodal transportation center, which will provide links to not only Amtrak but also bus and taxi services, pedestrian and bicycle traffic, and a future commuter rail service. The transportation center will include a ground transportation center, a passenger amenities building including a ticket office and passenger waiting area, and parking facilities.
