The Whippany River Railroad, chartered on August 1, 1895, built the first tracks to Whippany, New Jersey, a community within Hanover Township. The line connected Whippany with Morristown, where it interchanged with the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad.
Today, the Morristown & Erie Railway operates the line through Whippany. The company dates to August 28, 1903, and was formed through the consolidation of the Whippany River Railroad and the Whippany & Passaic River Railroad.
Today, the railroad’s system includes more than 100 miles of track and interchanges with CSX Transportation in Kearny, New Jersey, and Norfolk Southern Railway at Lake Junction in Wharton, New Jersey.
The Whippany Railway Museum, which opened in 1965, is located along the line.
