The application period is now open for Operation Lifesaver’s competitive Rail Transit Safety Education Grants.
The grants offer $140,000 in total funding for rail transit safety education and public awareness initiatives. The Federal Transit Administration helps make these grants available and supports OLI’s ongoing rail safety education and outreach efforts.
Eligible recipients of these grants include transit agencies and governmental entities that provide transit service. The grants are capped at $20,000 each and require non-federal matching funds of at least 25% of project costs. Projects must focus on safety education or public awareness initiatives in communities with operating or planned rail transit systems, such as commuter rail, light rail, subways and streetcars.
OLI must approve all materials created as part of the grant, and all grants must be developed in consultation with the state Operation Lifesaver program. Click here to view contact information for State Coordinators throughout the U.S.
All applications must be submitted via the Common Grant Application online grant processing program by Aug. 1, 2026. Grant awards will be announced no later than Sept. 30.
