Biography
John Hanley was a longtime Clarksville, Tennessee, city employee whose career included work with the city’s street railway system.
After leaving school at age 16, Hanley worked for the Clarksville Lumber Company before joining the old Street Railway Company as a motorman in 1899. In 1901, when street railway employees decided to strike, Hanley resigned rather than join the walkout. He then worked briefly at the city pumping station before becoming a fireman.
Hanley later returned to street railway work after Dr. N.L. Carney offered him a $10-a-month raise to become car inspector for the Street Railway Company, increasing his pay to $60 per month. By 1906, he was again working for the city, and in 1920 he became a fireman engineer, a position he held until his retirement in 1945. At the time of his retirement, Hanley planned to spend his time farming, gardening and growing flowers on his Seven Mile Ferry Road farm.
