Biography
Foster Blodgett Jr. (January 15, 1826–November 12, 1877) was a businessman, politician, and superintendent of Georgia’s Western & Atlantic Railroad. Born in Augusta, Georgia, Blodgett served as mayor of Augusta before the Civil War and commanded the Blodgett Artillery during the conflict. Following the war, he became active in Republican politics during Reconstruction and held several public offices, including postmaster of Augusta. At one time, he also served as treasurer of the state-owned Western & Atlantic Railroad before later becoming superintendent of the line. After leaving railroad service, he remained active in business and public affairs. Blodgett died in Atlanta on November 12, 1877, after a four-week illness and was buried the following day.
