Biography

Jerry Mills (c. 1946–May 16, 1988) was a CSX railroad conductor and longtime Smyrna civic leader. Mills spent 19 years working for the railroad while also building a reputation as one of Smyrna’s most active public servants.

He was first elected to the Smyrna City Council in 1973, served for 11 years, and unsuccessfully sought the office of mayor in 1981. After returning to public life, he recaptured his Ward 3 council seat in 1985 and was re-elected in 1987.

Despite battling kidney and heart disease, Mills remained active in city government and was credited with helping secure Smyrna’s annexation of the Highlands Industrial Park and advancing improvements to the city’s police department. He died on May 16, 1988, at the age of 41.
