Overview
The Pennsylvania Railroad completed the stone arch bridge over the Delaware River in 1903. The bridge is one of the largest the Pennsylvania ever built. To cross the river, Philadelphia & Trenton initially acquired the Trenton Delaware Bridge Company and constructed tracks on the company’s wooden toll bridge, originally erected in 1806. The railroad originally ran horse-drawn trains over the bridge. In 1835, the railroad reinforced the bridge to support steam locomotive operations.
